Antigua's Best Beaches

Apr 17, 2024

A vacation on the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua is probably just what the doctor ordered after what has been a difficult year for the world. Naturally, the Caribbean is famous for its picture-perfect beaches, however, in Antigua, you will truly be spoilt for choice. In fact, legend has it that Antigua has a beach for every day of the year, And this does hold some truth as no other island in the region boast such a diverse array of accessible beaches. Furthermore, the relatively small size of the island means you’ll always have a white-gold shoreline close by.

With that being said, however, with all of this choice things can become a bit overwhelming, especially if you are only visiting Antigua for a short holiday. We understand that holiday makers will be looking to make the most of the time here so we’ve narrowed down a list of the
best Antigua beaches to help you prioritize:

Galleon Beach (Freeman Beach)

Located just off English Harbour, this quarter-mile stretch of golden sand is famed for its calm, protected waters which make it one of Antigua’s best beaches for snorkeling. The seas here are crystal clear which makes it a real pleasure to explore the 75 ft reef. A visit to Galleon Beach provides the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the sea life with turtle spotting being a particular highlight.

If you're staying at The Inn At English Harbour, then this beach will be your daily view!

Ffryes Beach

If you are looking for Antigua’s best beach for families, then Ffryes on the west coast is the place to be. Being slightly removed from the rest of the island because of the lagoon, Ffryes Beach offers a serene spot for relaxation beneath the sea grape trees. This underrated beach is popular with locals but rarely becomes overly crowded. You’ll find some great barbecue spots here so do take the opportunity to try some Antiguan delicacies.

Half-moon Bay

This unique sandy crescent has a lunar-like feel especially when standing in contrast to the azure blue water that surrounds it. As far as visual aesthetics are concerned, Half-moon Bay is a photographer’s dream. The south side of the beach is popular amongst bodysurfers while the north is more suited towards calmer pursuits. But be sure to stroll through the middle for a spot of traditional grilled fish. You won’t regret it!

Valley Church Beach

Another west coast hotspot is Valley Church Beach with its serene waters and soft sands. If you’re lucky you might even spot dolphins during your day. The beautiful palm-fringed beach offers a wonderful contrast to the buzz of the nearby restaurants and casinos. When you get tired of lounging in the sun and if you aren’t quite ready to hit the beach bar, then take the opportunity to hire a personal watercraft and have some fun in the water.

Darkwood Beach

Idyllic Darkwood Beach is one of the less developed north coast beaches. With nothing more than a small restaurant and a few vendors, you’ll really be able to enjoy the tranquillity of the Caribbean sea here. Darkwood beach gently slopes into the sea and is protected by the rocks and reef making it a magnificent spot for swimming and snorkeling.

What would a Caribbean vacation be without those long, lazy beach days in the sun, the warm sand beneath your feet, and the sound of the waves crashing? So when you're planning your beach days in Antigua be sure to make sure a few of these top spots feature on your itinerary. Happy holidays.
